I have always loved music.
When I was a kid, I used
to go to sleep every night with my AM transistor radio under my pillow
listening to KXOK. They played all the old
Motown, Bebop, and a couple of new bands, the Beatles and the Rolling
Stones. A few years later, my Dad built
a Heathkit Stereo and while surfing the dial, I found the coolest station, KSHE
95. They played songs I had never heard
before. I’d get my snare drum, assorted boxes and cans (my drum kit) and jam.
My parents felt pity for me and got me a cheap drum set. The
cymbals got dented, they didn’t sound too good, but that didn’t matter, I was
playing drums! Mom and Dad thought it
was just a phase but I beat the crap out of them for 3 years. I don’t know if it was pity again or if they
just got tired of listening to bad sounding drums, but they sprang for a good
kit. Ludwig. Sparkle. Awesome.
I played in the usual garage bands with other guys who didn’t
know what they were doing either. In high school, played with some guys who
actually knew what they were doing. I think we had about 15 songs worked out
and got paid occasionally. Then by
chance, I was asked to try out for a touring band when I was a senior. I got
the gig and the day after I graduated High School, I hit the road with a cheesy
group that played at Hilton Hotels in the South and Southwest. I was with them
for 15 months. This is when I learned to really play. I learned structure and what is takes to play night after night,
living on the road.
When I returned, I thought it would be a good idea to start a
career because professional musicians in St. Louis are few and far between.
Somehow I ended up in the crazy medical field.
Now, if you have read the other guy’s bio pages, you already
know where I fit into this picture. Jeff, Dennis and I have been playing
together for almost 30 years and I’ve known Dan for almost that long too. I remember playing with Bob a few times and
that’s got to be at least 20 years ago.
So one could say we definitely have a history here.
For me, the last 5 – 7 years have been the best yet. There is no better feeling than playing in a
band that is hitting on all cylinders. It sweeps you up and carries you along.
I’m so lucky to be able to do this with these guys. My philosophy is easy these days, be a human metronome. Keep a
solid beat, good dynamics, and tasty fills.
Thanks to my family and friends for their support throughout the
years.
